Orthotics

Orthotics are custom-made orthopaedic devices to correct the foot position to neutral and allow the body to work at its best, reducing the strain of misalignment at the foot and higher joints.

They fit comfortably into shoes and optimise shock-absorbency. There is a broad- spectrum of orthotics available to address the severity of correction required and cost varies from €50.00 – € 300.00.
Your physiotherapist will assess your biomechanical alignment and prescribe the best orthotic for your condition and lifestyle.

In conjunction with a strengthening and flexibility programme they are very effective in paediatric correction of “in toe” or “ toe out” walking and allow a wider choice of shoe selection as the correction is in the orthotic and can be transferred from shoe to shoe.

Conditions for which orthotics are prescribed:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Metatarsalgia

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Shin splints

  • Flat feet

  • Rheumatoid & Osteoarthritis of the foot knee or hip.

Three major foot types are described:

There are many types of bladder dysfunction which can be addressed by physiotherapy.

  1. Neutral

    • Correct alignment at the ankle (sub-talar joint) allows the optimal platform for muscle and joint activation.

  2. Pronated

    • Flat feet increases strain at the ankle, knee and hip joint often associated with muscle imbalance- weakness.

  3. Supinated

    • High arch- decreases shock absorbency at the foot and commonly leads to stress injuries higher up the body even in the lumbar region.

Self Test

When coming out of the shower and feet are still wet, look at the shape your foot leaves on the floor and compare to the images above to have a simple insight into your foot type and if you suffer from any of the conditions listed previously you may benefit from orthotics.
