This involves both ante and post natal back care and pregnancy related muscle, tendon and ligament issues. During pregnancy the body changes through the three trimesters to prepare the body for birth and to accommodate the developing child.

Primarily it affects the sacroiliac joint, pelvis and lower spine as ligaments stretch to allow increased mobility at the expense of stability. Physiotherapy is directed at gentle realignment, posture correction, strengthening and supports as required. It also addresses strengthening post partum and complements very well with Pilates to prevent ongoing issues.

Bladder Incontinence / Control

There are many types of bladder dysfunction which can be addressed by physiotherapy.

  • Stress Incontinence

    • Leaking occurs when abdominal pressure increases beyond the coping mechanism of the pelvic floor i.e. coughing, sneezing, running.​

  • Urge Incontinence

    • A strong urge to go to the toilet occurs prior to the leak and failure to get to the toilet on time.​

  • Urgency​​

    • Strong urges to go to the toilet, which do not give an appropriate length of time to get to the toilet.​

  • Frequency

    • In a 24 hour period needing to go more than eight times and for low volumes​


Physiotherapy can help the above through assessment of the problem and teaching appropriate strategies and pelvic floor exercises.​​
